is it legal to free update iWork from trial version?

As all of you may know, iWork can be updated to the newest version from trial for free, which is supposed to be free only to people who purchased the new Mac product. Whether this is an inteded decision of Apple or not, what is Apple's policy to this free update? I read an artical that says apple's representative mentioned 'beliefs in Apple customers' where it leaves doubt if Apple would take further action about it or not. So here's the question. Should people feel guilty for downloading iWork for free? some people say it's Apple's marketing strategy to have more customers engaged with their product. And some people say it is not fair to provide free software where there are other people who purchased the product and actually paid money for it. What's Apple's firm stance for this?
