Check the images in that tech note.
There may be logs that can indicate what crashed. They will be inside /Applications/Utilities/Console ins the log list look inside ~/Library/Logs and /Library/Logs under the CrashReporter sections Find the newest one.
It helps if you can note what application is freezing or manage to reproduce.
It may be simplest to show what is installed to see if the software could be part of the issue.

Otherwise boot into safe mode (hold shift after the chime until the spinning 'cog' appears). Ensure the login window says 'safe mode'.

It will disable all third party extensions & startup items. If the Mac is better in safe mode it is time to get a system report and look at the third party software.
Be aware that some features will be disabled like wifi on some models, graphics drivers will be in a reduced mode - this is normal in safe mode.
Reboot to go back to normal.
