I accidently spilled hot chocolate on my phone. All seems fine except now it thinks that the headphones are continually plugged in. I don't get alerts or music out of my phone unless the headphones are in. Looking for any ideas how to fix this.

More than likely, especially since hot chocolate is a sticky solution, it has gummed up the headphone port. There is something in there that senses that the headphones are plugged in. You can try to clean it out with maybe a small round toothpick, but it might not be fixable. You may have to make an appointment with the Genius at the Apple store and see about an out of warranty replacement. User damage, including liquid damage is not covered under the warranty.
