question regarding itunes card

With the new Apple IOS update on the iPhone, you can now just scan the barcode on the iTunes card and it is uploaded and activated immediately, to do that shall i scratch the card to be scanned or i can scan the card without scratching? and please if you can clarify how it works exactly?
