Good question, don't know. I would contact Apple directly and find out if they have region restrictions like those on DVD players. I don't think there is--- BUT I really do not know. Good luck!

This is ill-advised.

The US warranty will not be recognized in Ireland. You would have to return it to the US should you require warranty service.

You may pay import taxes and duty when bringing it into Ireland.

You will pay US sales tax when you purchase it in the US.

You will have to purchase an unlocked GSM model to work in Ireland.

All in all you are far better off buying it in Ireland than in the US.

Read lllaass reply again. Kappy is wrong. As he said, purchasing an iPod from the US while you are in Ireland is not advised, but if you visit the US there is no problem in buying it here and taking it back. If you buy the ipod in the US and use it here, it is unlikely that there will be any import charges when you return to Ireland. The warranty is international, so there is no risk there. Do note that purchase in most US states will require a local sales tax (usually 5 to 9%) above the price of the iPod (unlike the VAT, the sales tax is not included in the price).

Here is the link to the Warranty. I see nothing in it which limits the iPod warranty to the country of purchase:

http://www.apple.com/legal/warranty/products/ipod-english-row.html There is the following which refers to iPhones and iPads ONLY:

IMPORTANT RESTRICTION FOR iPHONE AND iPAD SERVICE.

Apple may restrict warranty service for iPhone and iPad to the country where Apple or its Authorized Distributors originally sold the device.

As far as customs duty is concerned, I still doubt that any customs official would question the origin of an undeclared used iPod and insist that duty be paid on it. But I agree, that is only an assumption.

With "IMPORTANT RESTRICTION FOR IPHOHE AND IPAD SERVICE"... you just enforced what Kappy stated about the warranty. It states in black and white "Apple may restrict warranty... to the country where... originally sold the device". If I lived in another country I would think twice about buying a spendy toy that may or may not have a warranty that may or may not be valid. Although an iPod is not mentioned it is implied here in that is a similar device, I would hate to find out I don't have a warranty do to a technicality.

JEM24: Excuse me. Cannot you read? The restriction has nothing to do with an iPod. It has to do with an iPad and an iPhone, probably because those devices use cell phone technology connected to domestic service providers. The iPod (and wifi only iPads) do not. This is not a theoretical discussion. The OP needed information to make a serious purchase decision. Without a careful review of the documents, I believe that it is irresponsible for you to provide unsubstansiated information to the poster.

Thank you bobjbkin! You got me to to do some homework. And I stand corrected about the issue of iPhone / iPad warranty restrictions (which you added to the conversation) and your right, it has nothing concert about iPods and is irrelevant to the issue of warranty coverage for an iPod. But had you looked at EU warranty regulations and consumer rights vs US, in addition to those of Apple, it would be better for JSMc7742 to buy in Ireland, I'm sorry to say-- a purchase made in Ireland by JSMc7742 is better protected there than one made here. Plus if anything goes wrong JSMc7742 has local supports in addition to those offered by Apple. Also would like to add the advice to buy at home is not unfounded, I have bought these type of toys (granted not Apple products, but well known products) abroad, and a couple have broken, warranty or not I ended up throwing one away because I could not get it serviced and the other was lost in the mailing in an attempt to get it repaired. So back to the original post which boils down to "should I or shouldn't I", I wouldn't. You win. I'm out.
