Q: Why is my "other" space on my iPhone 5 / iOS 7 so large and always growing?

I have seen this question posted a lot but I don't believe I've ever seen Apple post a definitive response.  If there is one official definitive response on how to keep this from happening and I missed it sorry.

I have the same problem it seems many are having.  I have an iPhone 5 with 16 GB running iOS 7.0.4.  As soon as I upgraded to iOS 7, I started seeing a lot of my space being taken up by "other".  It was up to about 4-5 GB as I recall, which is ridiculous especially for a phone advertised with 16 GB.

The only remedy I could find that did anything was to restore my phone from scratch, which is a pain in the -ss, but I did it anyway.  Initially that seemed to work and I was in the hundreds of MB of "other" for a while.

Today, about 2 weeks later, I went sync and to my amazement it was up again to 2 GB of "other".  I synced it and then it grew to 2.52 GB.  ***?

I am on iTunes 11.1.3 on Mac if that makes any difference.

Is there a definitive fix or something different I can do for this recurrning problem?  Obviously I cannot keep restoring my iPhone once ever week or two to recapture disk space.  I hardly use my phone for the apps (use my iPad for most of that) so it's not like I am doing a bunch of complicated apps with large data sets.

Update: I synced it again and now it went up to 2.53 GB.

Is there a fix for this?  It is getting old having to delete all my music to make room for all this.

The first time I got sick of my "Other" it was 5 GB and seemed to be capped there. That was 1 phone ago. I deleted most of my text messages when I got a new phone and that seemed to do the trick.

My "Other" is now over 7 GBs. It's insane. It was just 8.5 GBs a few minutes ago, I don't know what I did but I bounced it back down to over 7. It was 6.5 when I started to correct the problem. Deleted all email accounts and texts, and problem grew.

Photos have long ago stopped being the largest item on my phone. I just don't have the room. Music is largely gone, apps are curtailed. The dominant colored bar on my iphone representation on itunes sync is the yellow Other, by quite a bit.

So I'm doing the full factory restore, because that's what I really needed to be doing. We'll see how that goes.

And yeah, yeah, yeah, we all know there won't be a response from Apple because in fact there is no official Apple web-board. God forbid Agent Smith not leap to the fore to remind us.

This is ridiculous. Eight gigs gone and no indication where.

    This is like phone cancer.

This is the exact problem that I am having and it's hugely frustrating - I did the full backup, wipe, reset, restore and it reduced the "other" from 12 GB (!!) to 2GB. But 48 hours later it's completely full again!

I can't wipe the phone every 2 days...

Did you find a solution in the end?

    Thanks!

I am having the same issue. Somehow, over the last five weeks of owning this phone, my "Other" storage has risen from 10 GB to 43.3 GB. ADDITIONALLY, my Music has been completely erased without ever being connected to do a sync. This latter phenomenon literally happened over the course of three hours - I was listening to music on my phone at 5 PM last night, and by 8 PM my phone was sporadically vibrating and telling me "Storage was almost full" and to "check storage settings," and my Music - tens of gigabytes worth of it - was gone from my phone.

Does anybody know what the **** is going on with my phone?

    Iphone 5S

    IOS 8.3

    16ggi iphone

    had 7.3 gig of other.

    Pictures stored on computer.

Here is what I found out after reading a bunch of posts and trying a bunch of things.

I used Imaze to show what was on my Iphone, and found out there is a folder called DCIM.

This is where your photos are kept. All of them, even the ones you took and put in the trash.

Your photos are also kept in the camera folder too.

I was able to remove some of the pictures in the DCIM folder and my "other" showed lower usage.

I am not saying this is the silver bullet, but this helped me.

I had the same problem.  And this is what I noticed and did to reduce the Other data on my iphone.

If you connect your iphone to your PC then go to Computer on your file system and navigate to Iphone (which is now connected as an external device).  Click on Internal Storage and then go to DCIM.  As stated in other posts this is where your photos and videos are stored.  I copied all of the photos off of the iphone.  Additionally while connected to Itunes I deselected any photos I was syncing from my PC to my iphone.  I then synced, essentially removing all photos from my iphone.  This freed up 6.8 GB of Other and I am now down to 600MB.  I then added my photos back onto the phone via Itunes and the Other data volume remained the same.

Thanks so much for this! The disk program has been updated to a new one called imazing https://imazing.com/features/ios-app-management

It is amazing, your solution fixed my problem as well. Many thanks!

    NovNet,

thanks bro.  Disillusioned is an understatement.  Ever since Steve Jobs punched his last ticket the company has been on the decline in terms of quality.

Hey, thanks for this! I was able to clean up the downloads folder which gave me back 2.6+ GB!! Thumbnails I think they changed the structure since then and it's not a problem anymore.

Thanks so much for the tip.

    Cheers!
