Remove any and all Norton / Symantec garbage according to its instructions. Once you verify that all its remnants are completely eradicated from your Mac, reevaluate its performance.

This page may be applicable but be sure to use whatever instructions apply to the product you installed: Removing Symantec programs for Macintosh by using the RemoveSymantecMacFiles removal utility

I have no experience with Norton AV for Mac, so I'll leave that to John ;-)

I did notice you have very little free memory, and your HD is almost full.Freeing up an additional 20GB or so of disk space and adding more memory could go a long way. 2GB of memory would be much better than what you have. If you can afford it, max out the memory (I believe your macbook will support 4 GB total).

Good. A Mac with only 1 GB RAM will easily be pushed to its limits of performance, and Norton will bring any Mac to its knees. Google Chrome is another notorious resource hog that runs poorly on even newer Macs.

Installing more memory is almost always beneficial, and is the most effective way of extending a Mac's economic life. You MacBook can actually address as much as 6 GB though 4 GB will certainly be sufficient. Purchase memory from a vendor known to supply RAM that meets Apple's stringent specifications. At present there are only two I have used and can recommend: Crucial and OWC / MacSales.
