Computer screen jumbled lines

What has happened to my computer screen? I was opening emails with two attachments one word document and one excel. When I tried to send out the next email the computer screen fragmented into colors and lines. Shut computer down with on/ off button. When turned back on may come on or not. If it does it only works briefly. One time word came up with a notice that said to verify the database utility. Did so and it said it was fine. This is a mac book pro 2.4G/ OS 7 system software is updated. It is about 5 years old. Is this a virus in mail? Possible on a Mac?.. Thanks

Hi k,

Is this an early 2008 model? They have a known GPU issue. You may have the NVIDIA issue. First, go to System Profiler > Hardware > Graphics/Displays and see if you have the GeForce 8600M GT GPU. If so, read about it here:

it was a free repair program, but it has expired. Still if you have that machine, I'd certainly go to an Apple Store and see if they will still cover it.
