I am using a thunderbolt to hdmi connector to connect with a Sony TV, The picture tranfers but sound does not transfer. How do I get sound transfer from my MacAir to the TV

MacBook Air, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

Does the TV appear in System Preferences/Sound/Output? If so, select it.
