How many amps can the Iphone charge with?

I am thinking of building a portable usb charger using an LM2596 voltage regulator. This will work but im worried about amperage. All I want to know is how the Iphone charges. Does it limit it to 1 amp or will it take any and all amperage into the battery. Because the regulator will output 3 amps.
