Apple: I found an insidious autocorrect bug!!! Please fix.

From as near as I can tell. I'm the 1st to notice this bug??

It ONLY it repeatable from iPad keyboard

It is ONLY repeatable using the "swipe up from comma to get apostrophe" shortcut.

Ok here goes:

Typing a sentence that begins with a word with an apostrophe causes errors.

Example: attempting to write "It's only"

It' so ly

Yup. That's from typing I t (sliding up from comma...) apostrophe s space o n l y

Now, leaving out apostrophe & letting iPad autocorrect

It's only

Works fine

Using the apostrophe without shortcut (the two key tap: switch to numeric keyboard, then choose apostrophe)

It's only

Works fine

Try again It(shortcut apostrophe)s only

It' son ly

***??????

So..... I love the shortcut apostrophe... but, it is DEEPLY flawed.

You are getting the suggestions about posting feedback to Apple for two reasons: first, you didn't note this fact in your original post and, second, some posters don't always read the thread carefully and post the same advice over again.

For what it's worth I can'r reproduce your bug on my iPad 4 using iOS 7.0.4. What iPad model do you have and what iOS level are you using?

It's only - from typing I t (sliding up from comma...) apostrophe s space o n l y

That's not to say that you aren't seeing this.

You could try restarting and/or resetting your iPad to see if this helps:

Restart: Press On/Off button until the Slide to Power Off slider appears, select Slide to Power Off and, after the iPad shuts down, then press the On/Off button until the Apple logo appears.

Reset: Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears (about 10 seconds).

Ahh... a whovian!! =)

Thank you for the kind attempt. Haven't been on these boards for YEARS.

Lol, had to update my list of equipment: it only said g4 Mac mini!

Forgot that you guys are used to idiotic questions posted by people that have tried NOTHING before posting.

To be clear:

This issue IS reproducible in iOS 7. My gf pointed it out to me via iMessage on her iPad mini to my iPad Air. I have a hard time believing it is not reproducible on yours. I can get it to occasionally not from Safari. Try from Messages app.. you will IMMEDIATELY see what I'm talking about.

It's only

It' so ly

It' so ly

It' so ly

Worked that 1st time for me as well. Weird. It will work in Messages exactly zero times.

I'm not going to restart my iPad because this is not that kind of problem. I do know how to though, lol.

Thanks again for the post.

In fairness, the forums often don't display replies - it's a long-standing bug in the forum software that neither the developer nor Apple have been able to resolve - so people may well have read the thread but other posters' replies weren't appearing.

Here: I just did it with the words That's what... Only using the swipe up on comma to get the apostrophe.... It autocorrects to:

That' sweat

To be clear... If I do NOT type in an apostrophe in thats and let it auto correct itself, it works fine.... If I press the numeric keyboard and choose the apostrophe, it works fine. It seems to be an issue with it using the swiped up apostrophe as a word break... In other words autocorrect is looking ONLY at the letters after the swiped up apostrophe as a new word in "That's what", it sees "s what" and corrects it to "sweat".

If you want to see for yourself:

1) launch Messages on your iPad (note: you do NOT have to be signed up as an active user to type two words)

2)type T h a t (press comma key and swipe up to get apostrophe) s space w h a t

3)notice anomaly

"That's what" does offer an auto correct on my iPad to "That' sweat" when using the exclamation key for the apostrophe.

If a restart or reset doesn't correct the problem there isn't much that you can do except turn OFF auto-correct and submit the bug to Apple.

Note that the reproducibility of these quirks may be hardware speed related.

Lol, FINALLY somebody to show the others I'm not crazy! =P

I don't think there's anything else to be done @ this point. I filled out a more detailed bug report and submitted it.

I marked you as providing an answer- just for being cool.

I must respectfully disagree with the notion that this isn't simply a software bug and it somehow hardware speed related, however. Having used iOS devices for quite some time, I've only noticed the keyboard lagging as you start getting over two years outdated... not anomalous quirks this specific. Also, you're getting it with a 4th gen iPad which is quite speedy... and I'm getting it with an iPad Air, which (as of this posting) is the fastest non Intel tablet on the planet.

CLOSING THREAD.

FIN.

Same result here since I tested it. Closing/cancelling (press the x) the auto-correct suggestion twice (or was it three times) suggests something else similar (which I forget).
