I have os10 and I have followed instructions, however: THERE IS NO ARRANGEMENT TAB PRESENT.

Video mirroring

Mirroring displays the same image on each display.

  1. Make sure your additional display is properly connected and powered on.
  2. From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
  3. From the View menu, choose Displays.
  4. Click the Arrangement tab.
  5. Enable (check) "Mirror Displays" in the bottom-left corner.

If there is no "Arrangement" Tab, then either

a) the Mac did not see the external monitor at all.

b) you are using the integrated graphics chip instead of the descrete graphics chip.

When you plug in the monitor does anything appear on the monitor? A background at the minimum? If not, then the Mac is not driving the external monitor.

How are you connecting the external monitor to your Macbook Pro? Is it an HDTV? Is the TV set to use the HDMI port you are using (or the VGA or DVI port you are using) as the "Input Source"? If a regular computer monitor, they typically have VGA or DVI and should automatically detect the source, but it is possible you have to tell the monitor to use the correct port.

Is it possible that you are using a utility such as gfxCardStatus (or similar) to control which graphics chip your Macbook Pro is using? For example, forcing the integrated graphics chip to save power.
