Have you tried restarting or resetting your iPad mini?

Restart: Press On/Off button until the Slide to Power Off slider appears, select Slide to Power Off and, after the iPad shuts down, then press the On/Off button until the Apple logo appears.

Reset: Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears (about 10 seconds).

The "Lock/Unlock" feature is enabled by installing a compatible Smart Cover/Case (or third-party equivalent) with an embedded magnet in the correct position in the cover. Are you using a real Apple product? If not, the cover/case you are using may not have the magnet in the right place or may not even have one at all.

If you ARE using a real Apple Smart Cover/Case and you have an Apple Store nearby, have them check both the case and cover you are using. You may have a bad magnectic switch on the iPad or a faulty cover/case.

I also remember reading here of a Smart Case/Cover which had the magnet installed upside-down and was repelling rather than attracting. You might want to take the cover off and flip it to verify this...you'll have to slide the cover around in different positions on the right-hand bezel on the iPad to see if you can activate the magnet.

Sorry for resurrecting this but....

The iPad Air doesn't require an"official" cover or one with a magnetic catch. The setting in the original screenshot works using the camera, so the iPad Air will turn the screen on and off when it is covered. The mini with retina display does not appear to have the same feature, or if it does, then the OP question has not been answered. So if anyone has the answer please post.

Soooo frustrated!! I have this same problem, my cover worked great til I undated my ipad.... Now it won't lock it when I close it and I've tried everything. I hate updates, in trying to fix one thing Apple messes up another.....!

They know this problem is out there, makes me wonder if this is their way of getting you to spend more money on a new case. I use to love Apple but I'm about ready to move on.... So **** frustrated!!

I've already checked the lock/unlock, I've even tried turning it off resetting my ipad and truning it back on and resetting my ipad, doesn't help...

I've tried soft reset and hard reset, doesn't help...

Worse part is, it had always worked right up until I did an up date. Which tells me clearly it was the update the broke the feature.... Obviously Apple knows this, plenty of people are on line just like me complaining about it.
