Nov 26, 2013 12:39 PM in response to a brodyby nanners151,Hi Max,
I have the same type of macbook as you and after countless searches on the internet, I have concluded that the Mini-display port does not allow for transfer of audio. What I do is connect my Mini-display converter (http://www.walmart.com/ip/20896475?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=3&adid=2222 2222227015098300&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=40410264910&wl4=&wl5=pla&wl6=38014431070&v eh=sem)to an hdmi cord and plug the hdmi into the back of the TV and then plug just a regular two sided AUX cord: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/3-3-5mm-stereo-audio-cable/8915178.p?id=121801026073 6&skuId=8915178&st=categoryid$pcmcat143700050032&cp=1&lp=2
into my headphone jack and into the back of the TV (most TV's nowadays have an audio-in jack on the back). I've also found that some TV's only allow the audio-in to work on specific hdmi channels (ex. HDMI 1..) You have to make sure that your TV is registering the sound to play on the same channel as your video (possibly why your RCA cord does not work--the RCA jacks are usually for DVD)
Another note-make sure you're purchasing the correct mini-display to fit your computer (but it sounds like you've already bought one!) -
Nov 26, 2013 1:25 PM in response to Max Mooreby frederic1943,If you connect the MacBook using a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter you will probably need to use external speakers or a 3.5mm stereo headphone jack to RCA sound plugs connected to a stereo sound system if your TV doesn't have separate RCA input plugs or a 3.5mm stereo input plug for audio with the HDMI plug. The Mini DisplayPort to HDMI doesn't carry audio unless you have the Mid 2010 model 7,1 and there're no audio plugs on most TVs to work with HDMI since it's expecting audio with the HDMI.
