Ipod memory help

I gust got the 60gb ipod, and need a little help. I have probably 350 cds and wanted to put them on it. I have about 19 free gigs on my hard drive. Will I run into trouble either with them fitting on my hard drive or my ipod? I also want plenty of extra room to watch videos etc. I know it can vary, but I don't want to get half way through itunesing my cds and discover that only half of them fit. Also, if I put that many cds on my hard drive will that slow it down, or clog things up? Sorry to be so uncomputery.
Thanks, Leah

Hello Leah,

Yes, if you put those cds on it, it would slow things down. I don't know how much, but it would certainly affect it's processing speed.

First start by putting your iPod on the Manual Update setting. (by going into Edit> preferences> iPod) That way your iPod won't update with your computer and delete everything off of it.

Then put your CD's onto iTunes, load them on your iPod, delete them off your computer. This way, you won't hog up all your memory on your computer by keeping all the albums on iTunes.

Beware, though. You are basically at your own risk if your iPod has a problem. If it does lose all its songs/videos, for example, you'll have to load all the songs back on to iTunes, then onto iPod...

But here's another choice. You can get an external drive for your computer to hold the songs on iTunes on it, at common computer-technical places like newegg, circuit city. You can also get a hard drive for your iPod, though I'm not sure how much they are, and again, you can probably get them at those typical computer kind of places.

Hope this helps, Leah! Good day!

The number of tracks/cd's you can fit on your ipod is directly related to how you rip them. As a very rough guide, ripping a cd at a reasonable quality will take about 100Mb. You can decrease the quality and increase the quantity if you wish. Ripping via itunes to an aac format at 128kb/s seems to be adequate for most users, although some rip at much higher rates in different formats.
The number of cd's you digitise and store on your hdd will not have a noticable effect on the performance of your pc... unless that is you fill the drive completely, as a rule of thumb i generally only fill my drive to 90% of its full capacity.
