My iPhone shows the battery to be flat when I know it isn't. Why.

My iPhone 5 has plenty of charge, but will suddenly say that it's nearly run out then die. When I place it back on charge it shows the correct amount again. Why does this keep happening ?.

iPhone 5s, iOS 6.1.5

You could also do a Reset All Settings reset. The battery meter is tied to the phone settings and by resetting them all you also reset the battery meter back to factory fresh. You won't lose any data, media, pictures, etc. You just have to reset any setting you turned on or off.

Then you need to actually run your phone down all the way to dead and do a full charge over night.

If it keeps giving you problems there might be a problem with the battery connection inside the phone which you will need to have Apple look at.
