Why is my iPhone locked after update to iOS 7.0.4.

Hi, I installed iOS 7.04 on my iPhone 4. I have not been able to use the phone since because it is asking for a password, which I did not have before the upgrade. My Apple ID password does not work. This means that I cannot go to "settings" in my iPhone, an action frequently recommended in "Apple support.". Please help. How do I get around this?

Thanks ckuan!

I tried to restore too through iTunes, but the network connection is lost everytime, before the restore is completed. I have tried to do this about 5 times. Just called Xplornet about this problem (it's a satellite connection; we do not have cable as we live in the country). Their response is to bypass the router and plug in the ethernet cable directly into the iMac overnight. I will try this tonight.

I'm still not sure what password it is asking for. When you upgrade to iOS 7 the setup prompts you to create an unlock code for the phone, a 4 digit number. You can skip this if you choose, but apparently you didn't skip it, so whatever 4 digit code you entered is your passcode. If you don't remember it see ckuan's links below.

If the phone already had iOS 7 installed and you upgraded to iOS 7.0.4 then you are faced with Activation Lock. This is a new feature that associates a phone with the Apple ID of the owner, so a lost or stolen phone can never be activated. You will be prompted for the passcode for the owner's Apple ID, and you cannot complete the setup until the correct passcode is entered. This is completely different from the screen unlock code.

Hi Lawrence,

Well, this is complete mystery. When I upgraded to iOS 7.0.4, the setup did NOT prompt me to create an unlock code for the phone. If it had, I would have entered a simple code that I use for a couple of credit cards. I am 100%sure it did not ask me for an unlock code, and the phone did not already have iOS 7 installed. Just prior to upgrading my iPhone, we upgraded our iPad. It did have a password, but after the upgrade, it changed the wallpaper and is no longer asking for a password. You probably think I am confused between the two gadgets, but I can assure you I have not lost it. BTW, the 4-digit password we used to enter on the iPad does not unloc the iPhone either. Gremlins..........

Good morning Lawrence,

I was finally able to restore the iPhone, after plugging the iMac directly into the router. This morning, in iTunes, I was asked for my apple ID and password. Hallelujah, this worked. The next screen welcomes me to my new iPhone and asks me whether I want to restore all my information from a previous back-up, Nov. 29 at 6:00am or set up a new iPhone. Of course I'd prefer restoring from a previous back-up. However, is there a chance I will be prompted again for a password before accessing the phone? If my problem was caused by an activation lock, the appleID password did not unlock it. In other words, if I restore is it possible I'm setting myself up for the same problem again? Thanks for your help.
