Q: How do you know if a MacBook Pro retina display is switched on?

I have just bought an early 2013 MacBook Pro Retina display and don't see the usual light that comes on when the display is off or the computer is in sleep mode. So I was wondering how you tell if it's still on/ what it is doing.
