I purchased a 2010 MacBook Pro on eBay and it was delivered with no operating system. It has disk utility recovery, but the choices listed don't apply. I don't have an time machine backup, nor can I restore Mavericks. I bought a copy of Snow Leopard to install, but can't figure out how to do it. Hoping someone out there has some suggestions.

You will have to contact Apple customer support and get duplicate Snow Leopard installation disks. They will need the serial number of the MBP (on the bottom) and there is a charge.

I purchased a copy. Of snow leopard when the MacBook Pro arrived without an os, but I can't figure out how to install it.
Put the Snow Leopard disk in the DVD or the USB stick in the USB port. Power in the machine and hold down the "option" key. Select the install image and rock away!
Put the disc in the drive while holding down the C key and follow the instructions.

Where did you purchase the Snow leopard disk? Is the disk a 'retail' disk, white in color or gray? If the former, it will not install in the MBP even though it is the same OS. If the latter, it must be for the exact same model. If not, my first suggestion is applicable.

The version on the "Full Retail" 10.6.3 DVD is likely to be build 10D575, which is too early to Install and run on that MacBook, which shipped with one of the custom versions listed in the box above.

I went back to eBay and bought a retail copy not realizing there was more than one flavor. I'm visiting family tomorrow and there is an apple store about 10 min away, so I'll cart the MBP in and let them get it up and running. Thanks to everyone for your help.
If you are in the USA, they may not be open tomorow (Thanksgiving). I hope that they can install Snow Leopard, but I would urge you to get duplicate installation disks anyway. There may may be a point in the future when you may need them.
