how to configure router with static IP

Hi,

I have requested a static IP from ISP provider.

Now I would like to give static IP addresses to all my internal PC's using my Mac Extreme router.

my ISP requires the Airport extreme to be configured in 'DHCP' (internet connection).

If I use 'static' then the ISP router does not see my Extreme router.

However my mac router does not allow me to use internet connection 'DHCP' when using router mode 'DHCP only'

Can anybody give me a some tips?

Thanks in advance

You are talking about two completely different Static IP questions here.

If your ISP has issued a Static IP address to you for the AirPort Extreme, this is the IP Address that you must use in order for your AirPort Extreme to connect to the Internet.

Open AirPort Utility, click on the AirPort Extreme icon and then click Edit

Then click on the Internet tab a the top of the screen.

The setting for Connect Using must be set to Static, and you will need to enter in the IP address, DNS servers, etc information that your ISP has provided for you to be able to connect to the Internet. In the screenshot example below, you would enter the Static IP address that your ISP provided to you in the IPv4 box.

For now, click the Network tab at the top of the screen and insure that the setting for Router Mode is set to DHCP and NAT.

We first need to make sure that your AirPort Extreme can connect to the Internet using the Static IP address that you have been assigned.

Then, we will tell you how to set up Static or Reserved IP addressed for each of your devices on your local network if this is what you want to do. Normally, this would not be needed, but it can be done if you wish.

Hi Bob,

thanks for the quick and detailed response.

I had already tried this set up several times. ('static')

But every time I used this internet setting the router didn't seem to have internet connection anymore.

So I contacted my ISP this morning and they told me that I need to use DHCP for internet settings.

I did find this very strange. As a consequence I posted this discussion. Because my final goal is that my router will create fixed IP addresses for different devices.

The feedback I received from their helpdesk is that the ISP modem does not recognize my router when it is in status 'static'. We did a test when the modem was configured with static internet settings. It did not work. When I changed the router to DHCP internet settings, they told me that they could see my router. And internet worked fine again.

This setting would not be used if you want to connect using a fixed or static IP address. There is some additional information here that we are missing.....or your ISP is operating in a strange, non-standard way.

Can you provide the make and model number of your "modem"?

The Router Mode of DHCP only is also rarely used, and would only really be appropriate if your ISP was providing you with a fixed bank of multiple fixed or static IP addresses to use.

If this were the case, the first IP address would be used as a Static IP address for your connection, and other devices on your network would receive the other fixed IP addresses.

99%+ of the time, you would use the Router Mode setting of DHCP and NAT on a network when you want the AirPort to perform as a router.

Edit....your other post indicates that you have another router upstream on your network from the AirPort Extreme. You would not want to run two routers in series on a network. That explains the problems that you are having.

The AirPort Extreme needs to be configured in Bridge Mode. It cannot be the "main" router on your network when you already have another router on the network. That is a fundamental networking rule.

after some trial and errors I'm able to use the internet settings with 'static'

Good news, nice work.

It works when I keep my router mode 'Off (Bridge Mode'.

This indicates that you have another mode/router or gateway type of device on the network that is performing as the router for the network. You only want one device acting as a router for the network, so that correct setting for the AirPort would be "Off Bridge Mode".

Unfortunately, the AirPort cannot hand out IP addresses at all in this setting. If you want to assign Static IP addresses to clients on the network, then you will need to configure these settings with your modem/router or gateway type of device.

The AirPort needs to be in the "Off (Bridge Mode)" setting since that is the correct setting for your network. The AirPort would not function correctly if you tried to set it up with the DHCP and NAT settings.

Hi Bob,

the ISP provider has checked the modem

problem not related to them.

It seems their helpdesk does not even know what kind of modems was installed 🙂

The config is now more clear to me.

The ISP provider is providing the IP adresses through a server, next in line there is a modem that provides the WAN connection between their server and my home network

Last status: internet = static, network / router mode = off (Bridge mode) works fine.

If I go over to DHCP then I have no internet anymore 😕

I have an ISP modem/router with 5 static ip addresses. I have an AirPort Extreme (#1) and I want to configure it with two cameras that require static ip addresses in order to control the cameras over the internet. I then have several devices that need to forward data to other servers on the internet (weather station and solar monitor). Then I have a number of computers I just want to use with internet access using dhcp. I also have a second AirPort Extreme (#2) running in extended network mode to allow me to reach one of the two cameras that uses one of the static ip addresses connected over Ethernet to Airport #2. My first camera is Ethernet connected to Airport #1.

Currently I have my AirPort Extreme set in bridge mode. Everything seems to work, but I am thinking after reading some of your responses that there is a better configuration. Thanks

Hi Wouter,

Did you find a solution?

I think I have the same problem, and surely with the same provider if you live in Belgium.

The problem is that when I'm in Bridge Mode, my apple TV keeps dropping the internet connection every couple of minutes, so streaming or watching Youtube is impossible.

I'd be happy to learn if you have found a solution or if you're still working in Bridge Mode?

BR

Michel
