I'm assuming this has to do with the recent adobe update I did. Anyone have a solution here.

Right click on a PDF, lok under Open With and check what is the default.
Then select Preview instead of Adobe and verify that the file can open in Preview.

It may be damaged or use a file format that preview doesn't recognize. That is the error I get.

I can open existong PDF files that I have saved in my documents but no new ones.
Recieve an email with a pdf I need to open....it wont open from Mail nor will it open when I save it to desktop or downloads folder.
So the file won't open in Preview either? Correct?

PDF's I rec'd in emails back on 11/22 will open.
PDF's I recieved after that date will not open.
You need to know whether the files are good, do you have access to another computer with which to test whether they open or not?
I have this same problem. Does anyone have a fix. Only happened since upgrading to Mavericks.
Seemes to be anything that arrives by email. Also cannot attach a pdf to an email.
Was there ever an answer to this?
I'm having this same exact problem right now. However, I know the file is good since it actually will open on my iPhone. However, on my Mac I get the "It may be damaged or use a file format that preview doesn't recognize." error.
Has there been any resolution to this. We are having a similar problem where all PDF attachments received in mail cannot be opened by either Adobe Reader, Preview etc. Yesterday was fine and today it isn't working. They are also coming up blank / with error on mobile devices. This is slightly infuriating and would be great to have some method of resolution.
We are operating OSX El Capitan 10.11.5 on Macs and iOS 9.3.3 on iPhones.
I have this question too. I am able to open new documents in Adobe reader but not in Preview. It is not just pdf documents attached to mail but also documents that I have scanned using my printer. Old ones open but new ones open but are blank with Preview.
I'm using Sierra 10.12.1 and latest version of adobe reader.
