Missing tooth on charger port

The screen on my iPhone 4s stopped working, so I sent it in for repair under warranty. They are saying that my phone is missing the fifteenth tooth on the charger port so it is not covered. Does anyone know what this tooth corresponds to? I've had no problem charging, syncing, or docking my iphone. I've also only ever used approved apple chargers and docks, so I have no idea how it is missing. It was charging just minutes before I handed the phone in for repair.

The phone is less than 6 months old.

iPhone 4S, iOS 7.0.3
