I'm not being able to quit Mail, after going to Preferences to try to block emails. Can you help?

I don't think this email helps you, but since I let my machine update to Maverick, I've had more glitches in Mail. At times it has not let me exit; I have to kill the program. One or two times, it outright crashed.

Maybe this works:
Choise newstart, hold down shift-Key with chime-tone appiers for at least 20 seconds.
After secure boot is ready, empty the trash.
Newstart again.
