Problem with audio on .wmv file

A windows friend sends me .wmv files that I have always been able to open with WMP. Recently I've been getting this message when opening these files: "This file may not play correctly because it was compressed by using a codec that is not supported". I click on the OK button and the file opens but there is no audio. I have upgrated Mac OSX a couple times and not sure if that is when this problem started. I have the latest version of WMP, even reinstalled it just to make sure. I also downloaded Flip4Mac to see if that solved the problem but QuickTime can't open the file at all and I get this message: "Error Opening Movie. The movie could not be opened". Any suggestions on what might be causing this and want I can do? I've searched the discussions and see other people have had a similar problem but haven't seen a solution yet.

Thanks, D

Hi, B.D.D.

The files may have been encoded with the Indeo CODEC, which is popular on Windows but for which no Mac OS X equivalent exists.

Likewise, neither Flip4Mac nor the last version of WMP can play files encoded with the most recent versions of Windows DRM (Digital Rights Management).

I presume your other WMV files play OK and it is just an issue with the latest files.

Good luck!
