Mavericks Magic Mouse Scrolling Issues

Many Magic Mouse scrolling issues have been reported and I'd like to add a list that affect several of my Macs:

1. Issues in iTunes

- When you are in the iTunes store, the top coverflow allows you to use your magic mouse to swipe left and right

- However, it does not swipe like an iPhone where you can re-swipe midway and instead can only do a full swipe

- You can test this by doing 2 quick swipes and the result is the swipe will stop altogether

- This should work like an iPhone where you can control the swipes at any point during the animation

2. Issues with Finder windows

- In very long lists of files and folders, if you scroll 2 or 3 times the ability to scroll stops

- This either requires you to put the mouse focus on something else and try scrolling again

- Scrolling should not stop working

- This is less apparent with inertia turned on

- However, intertia turned on makes working in other applications such as Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator almost impossible

3. Issues with Mail 7.0x

- The latest update still has scrolling issues where it stops working after prolonged use

- The only fix is to quit or force-quit to bring back scrolling capability

4. Issues in iPhoto (The following is with inertia turned off)

- When scrolling long list of photos, the speed of the scroll can suddenly change with variable acceration

- This results in jumping forward too quickly

- Mountain Lion was worse, however the scolling behavior is hard to predict in long lists

- There are various mouse scrolling 3rd party apps but finding a speed is quite difficult

I'm sure there are other mouse scrolling issues but hope these issues can be improved. Unfortunately, some of these issues have persisted since pre-Lion releases.

Hi Eric,

Thanks for the suggestion - yes, these have all been reported to Apple. However I thought it would be helpful to post this in case others have the same issues so that people don't feel it's only their Mac. If anyone else has this issue and perhaps a fix or hack to allleviate these issues are always great to hear.

For now, some things I have done to alleviate the issue:

1. turn off inertia for mouse (accessibility settings in System Prefs)

2. turn on "show scroll bars" to always (general settings in System Prefs)

3. routinely restart Mail (worse, routinely restart the Mac - something I have not done since pre-os x days...)

So far, I've tried other various tips like deleting library files to fix Mail but those only last a short while. Hope Apple fixes these in the next update.

Scrolling problems for me too in Safari. The MM will stop scrolling randomly and I need to restart Safari to get it going again. Furthermore, when scrolling stops if I turn off the MM and connect a USB mouse it still won't scroll.

Another problem, not sure if connected to the mouse problem, is that my iMac will freeze at times when Safari is operating. The mouse will move but not respond, and the keyboard also does not respond. Have to turn off the machine with the power key and reboot.

27 inch iMac 11,1, late 2009

8 GB memory

Mavericks 10.9

Safari 7.0

Have a similarly configured 27 inch iMac, late 2012, works perfectly, no scrolling or Safari problems.

Thank you Tbirdvet, this is a new method I haven't tried yet.

Interestingly, I have reinstalled my Adobe CC apps and deleted my Adobe CS6 apps (and CS6 prefs) - since then, the scrolling issues have subsided. The good behavior of my mouse might be temporary, as with other fixes I've tried, but a different issue I had was with Acrobat Pro locking up intermittently and this too seems to have alleivated that as well.

I will definitely give the cache deletion a try once I see the mouse issue come back - I've been holding off responding as the Adobe reinstall may be a short lived fix but keeping my fingers crossed.

Utazdevl and UltimateFrisbeeRules, glad things are a bit better for you - hope Tbirdvet's cache suggestion works for you! Tbirdvet, please let us know if this is a permanent solution for you.

In the meantime, 10.9.1 hopefully will be released soon with a permanent fix for everyone.

This non scrolling issue got me thinking so I did some digging into non scrolling issues starting with Lion, then ML and now Mavericks. The common link seems to be the wired mouse or Magic mouse or trackpad driver plist file. Depending on which you have one of the main fixes is to delete that file in your hidden library preferences folder. It appears to get corrupted causing this issue especially when upgrading the OS.

Wired mouse: com.apple.driver.appleHIDmouse.plist

Magic Mouse: com.apple.drriver.applebluetoothmultitouch.mouse.plist

Track pad: com.apple.driver.applebluetoothmultitouch.trackpad.plist

In finder under option GO click on library and then to preferences folder and find the file that matches your device and move to trash but do not delete until you test all is OK. If all works empty the trash. A new file will be generated.

If this fixes your issue please let this forum know.

I have been having bizzare problems with the mouse. It alternates working on different browsers. Always worked perfectly on Safari until today. Could not scroll at all on any webpage on Safari - but on Chrome no problem. Firefox not working.

Close and relaunch - it works - then stops suddenly again.

Crazy.

IS there any solution to this?
