Mac OS X Version 10.6.8 Apple tv icon in task bar missing ?

Hi,

I have mid 2009 Mac Book Pro Mac OS X Version 10.6.8 build 10K549 fully updated as reported by OS update utility in the 'About Mac' option. The Apple tv is running fine with iTunes and other apple devices but there is no apple tv icon in taskbar to directly send the screen of my laptop to tv. Do i need to upgrade to other flavors like Maverick, is yes which one ? Or is their a work around for Snow Leopard to get it working ?

AirPlay Mirroring requires a second-generation Apple TV or later, OS X 10.8 or better and is supported on the following Mac models: iMac (Mid 2011 or newer), Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer), and MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer). You can see which Mac you have and which operating system you are using by selecting 'About this Mac' from the Apple menu in the top left corner of your Mac and selecting the 'More Info' button.

Hi,

Thanks for the info but that is the default spec given on the Apple website and i have mentioned my OS version and Mac book model, i already went through that.

Again i have "mid 2009 Mac Book Pro Mac OS X Version 10.6.8 build 10K549", if i upgrade to lets say 10.8 or 10.9 will the mid 2009 Mac Book Pro be able to handle the Apple tv icon on taskbar? Can you please suggest a work around so that older models such as mine might work despite being "officially" incompatible?

Also if you could please point in the right direction for upgrading from Snow Leopard to Maverick or Mountain Lion.

Your computer doesn't meet the requirements for AirPlay, you can upgrade the software from the Mac App Store, but you can't upgrade the hardware.

There are 3rd party alternatives to AirPlay, you can find on the internet, personally I find them quite poor and don't really recommend any of them, so leave the searching to yourself if you want to go down that route.

Hi,

As you are the expert, i would go with what you are saying but required specs for airplay on iphone states that "To use AirPlay, you will need the following: iPhone 4s (or later)....." whereas i have iPhone 4 with iOS 5.0.1 and airplay works fine from my phone.

So, if you get any chance of upgrading MacBook Pro 2009 to Maverick or any other higher version OS x and using the airplay, please do let me. The one i was trying on belongs to a friend and i just don't want to go through the whole backup and fresh installation cycle.

Thanks for your help!
