New to Mac. Why have all my images disappeared from my MS word documents when I open them up on my Mac?

Just makeing the transition from Windows to Mac (book pro Maverick OS x 10.9) and although very happy, it seems that any MS word document I open which has images on them, clipart photos/pictures or personally scanned images, these do not show on the document itself when I open it. Strangely enough, however, I can see the images in the preview prior to opening the doc. When I do, instead of the image I get the word "text" in its place.

Currently, I am not using Word for Mac, I am just using Pages. All my files, however, are MS word files, coming over from years with Windows. Pages will read the text, but it won't show any images. How come?? I get the word "text" when I open the doc. Strangely enough however, It does show the images in the preview, prior to opening the docs. ???????

Rudy, I'm looking around for more help for you, as I don't use Pages yet.

In the meanwhile, could you please tell us

which version of Pages are you using?

Which version of MS Word?

Which Operating System?

How much available Memory is on your Mac?

How much RAM is installed?

Did you ImBed the images into the word files or LINK the image? Two totally different things. If they were Linked then you would need those same images on your Mac hard drive and change the link to point to those specific images.

But then it may just be an incompatibility between Word and Pages.

Cheers. The version of Pages is 5.0. The docs were orinally made with MS word 2010 for Windows (XP Home). The OS is Maverick 10.9 with an 8GB memory, just bought this - 13" Retina, so no problems with memory size, not to open pictures anyway.

The images were orinigally just copied & pasted onto the documents from the Internet. There was no linking to pictures. Copy & paste & they have been on those docs for years. Now when I open the same docs up in Pages, it states that the document has been adjusted and that headers, footers and images have been removed. I press ok, open the new Pages version of the doc, and hey presto - all images have gone, text moved around etc.

Then you might consider purchasing MS Office 2011 for Mac. Seems to be a file incompatibility between the 2 different word processing programs.

Rudy, which version of Pages are you using? Pages 5? If so Pages 5 isn't good for opening old MS Word documents. You'd be better of if you bought Pages 09 (iWork 0) and install on your new computer.

Pages 5 is a very stripped down Pages 09. About 90 features are gone from Pages 5 and if you don't need it for moving documents over iCloud to iOs devices don't use it.

Ok, if this is going to solve the problem. Heard quite a few nightmares about installing/using MS 2011 crashing, being non-responsive etc. Is Pages09 a better option? And willl it solve the problem? Will newly created files in either be compatible on a Windows system too?

I've been using Office 2011 for several years and have never had a problem with it. Any problem other might have are more than likely caused by genera problems they have with their Mac's from other incompatible software they have installed.

Pages 09 does open MS Word documents but not perfectly when it comes to long tables and images that spans over several pages. Otherwise it is OK. But if you don't have Pages from the start you could try LibreOffice instead. Its free.
