Q: I'm looking for a new 8 input audio device compatible with OS 10.9.

I just upgraded to a new MacBook Pro running OS 10.9 (Mavericks) and want to use GarageBand for multi-track recording and I need to find a replacement for my Presonus Firepod. It seems that OS 10.9 is no longer supporting this device. Additionally, since Apple has done away with Firewire, should I make the switch to USB? I've heard that USB 2.0 doesn't always play well with the new USB 3.0 inputs in the new MacBook Pro.

I would be interested to know of any USB interfaces that actually work with USB3.0 on the latest retina models, I have the same macbook pro as you.

I currently own an Echo2 interface and N.I Audio4 DJ interface.

and can confirm neither of these interfaces work with the new Macbook Pro, so don't buy these!

If you have a firewire to thunderbolt adapter, you can use firewire based interfaces.

Knowing that Apple doesn't supply Firewire ports anymore I did order the Firewire to Thunderbolt dongle. What I didn't realize is that it is a 9-pin Firewire and not 6 or 4 -pin. All my Firewire peripherals are 6-pin, so I went out the day the computer arrived and bought a 9 to 6-pin cable. When I plugged everything in the Presonus Firepod wasn't recognized by the Macbook Pro and no signal came through. So I went to the Presonus website and the Firepod is listed as :

Not Supported in Mac OS X 10.9 (Mavericks) and later versions of OSX:

    FireStudio (2626)

    FireBox

    FirePod

    FP10

    Inspire

    Inspire GT

    FireStation

    V-Fire

So my two FirePod units are useless with the new computer. I can still use them with my iMac running OS 10.6.8 but I wanted the portability of a laptop.

Another thing is thunderbolt does not deliver as much power as firewire, so my old fireface 400 would require using an external power supply in order to work with the new macbooks, which is not what I'm after, I need something USB bus powered!
