Hi
how can i get my laptop to export the image to an external monitor?
I have a MB Pro, and have tried DVI to HDMI direct cable, the supplied DVI-D cable connected to VGA cable and no luck.
the screen on my laptop is flickering and I want to use the external monitor.
Any advice appreciated.

Try command and the F1 key. If that doesn't work, try option command F1.
I take it you cannot see anything (like System Preferences) on your MBPs display, just the flickering? If so, it's possible it's a GPU problem (on the logic board) and not a display issue.

The typical method is to just plug it in.
If you are using Mini DisplayPort, the adapter must be right at the Mini DisplayPort end, you cannot convert to VGA halfway down the cable.
DVI and Mini DVI provide computer-generated VGA at the computer connector, in the bar at one end and the four pins around it, plus one more from the top row of the grid.
The biggest problem with HDMI is that the display must be "paying attention" and ready to answer when the Mac queries for the name and capabilities.
If your internal display works at all, this can tell you whether the external display has been detected:

It depends. What year, model, size is it and/or anything else you can tell me about it?
Some models are known for GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) issues; it's kind of like a CPU but it's dedicated to graphics.

Thanks for the detailed answer, however, I can barley see anything on the laptop screen.
It flickers and sometime goes black completely.
I was hoping to get the start up screen on the external monitor at the very least.
I cannot see any menu bars or icons on the laptop at start-up.
