Audio output in Macbook.

on my macbook when I open "audio midi setup" under audio output it says "output is not supported". the output works fine, the speakers or headphones work, I plugin an optical cable and in DVD Player it detects the "digital output" but I can't select to change the output settings in audio midi setup. anyone know whats wrong?

hi,
I don't know if I 've understood your problem, but it seems to be something about controlling devices via midi.......so if you want to plug in some midi tools you can't do it simply by the audio output because the midi system it's a different thing......you'll need something like the usb to midi converters like some EDIROL products if you want to control something via midi..........
hope this helps

Are you using a miniTOS optical cable in the headphone port?

I just got one today which I use with my amp. In audio MIDI setup, under Audio Devices, my default output and system output are both set to "Built-in Output".

Then when I select properties for "Default Output", I can configure speakers, source, format etc.

I assume this is a normal setup, because everything is workign fine, so just check that you have all the same options selected as me.

I haven'y yet tested 5.1 or encrypted audio or anything with a DVD yet though.

I think this is a bug in the Intel version of Mac OS X. The Audio Midi Setup utility worked fine on my 12" PowerBook and my Cube, but I'm seeing the same "not supported" message on both my iMac and MacBook. If you want to use your USB Harman/Kardon SoundSticks and you try to play the audio from Final Cut Pro or Final Cut Express, you have to edit that Audio Midi Setup. I've been unable to do this so I get no audio from those applications when my SoundSticks are plugged in.

I can't speak for Logic Pro, but because the audio in DV files is usually 48KHz and the default setting for Audio Output section is 44.1KHz in the Audio Midi Setup utility, the audio in DV files you're editing doesn't output correctly. Specifically changing the "Format" to 48000 Hz allows the audio to play through your speakers. Unless you're working with 48KHz format audio, I wouldn't think you need to edit that setting.
