why do I have all this used space after erasing with disk utility

So, I used disk utility to erase a drive of mine. Immediately after erasing, I right clicked "get info" and this was what I got:

User uploaded file

I had 223.1 MB already used immediately after erasing!

So, I opened terminal cd'd to the drive and typed "du -h" and this is what I got:

User uploaded file

This does not add up to 223.1 MB and I don't understand why so much space is being used immediately after an erase. Any ideas?

An empty hard drive still must have hidden data structures in place to manage the file system. This is completely normal.
