Alternative ways to turn off iphone
The lock button on my phone has stopped working and I am wondering if there is another way to turn off iPhone 5 without using that button.

Actually there is, ckuan is wrong. You can use Assistive Touch:

Nothing in the link document says it can turn the phone OFF as OP requested.

Fact is, you can use Assistive Touch to turn off an iPhone.

Once Assistive Touch is turned on:
Tap the dark circle to open the Assistive Touch menu, then tap "Device" and tap and hold the Lock Screen icon. This will bring up the iPhone's Power-Off slider.
Okay thanks, I didn't hold the Lock icon long enough.
Hey you can shut down your Any iPhone in an easy way. If your iPhone is not reponding so all you have to do is hold the sleep/wake button and home button for approx 3 sec and after that you iPhone will shut down. So I hope it helped you.
