iMac PC does not support latest Adobe FP/can't watch Youtube/Only solution=new computer??

I can no longer watch You Tube because the latest version of Adobe Flash Player

will not download to a PPC. I run Tiger 10.4.11 (I know that's ancient but it works

very well!) Does this mean the only way to view You Tube would be to buy a new

computer? Everything runs perfectly except You Tube. I've never been a big fan of the site

I still would like to have access to it but buying a new computer to get one site seems

like a bridge too far. I have Adobe flash Player and but not the latest version.

This problem only happened recently which seems strange. I even have a

couple of videos on the site and have access to my account. I can get the site and my account but

first the sound stopped playing a month or two ago but the videos still played. Now the videos

don't play at all. From what I've heard, only a computer with Intel can accept the latest version of

Adobe. Any thoughts or tips??

It will work on a PPC Mac running Leopard, but not Tiger:

I am in the same boat. I run a G5 PPC iMac and I cannot watch flash videos on the BBC website or on BBC iPlayer, and it struggles on YouTube.

For reasons that passeth all understanding, they all work with the PPC version of Firefox, called TenFourFoxG5.app, once you have enabled plug-ins, as it does not natively support Flash.

You can download TenFourFoxG5 from here:

http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/

Now for the interesting bit: TenFourFox, like Firefox, does not support most plug-ins. Unless you are prone to headaches (in which case don't) you can read about that here:

http://code.google.com/p/tenfourfox/wiki/PluginsNoLongerSupported

But there is a workaround!

Open TenFourFox and type in the address bar: about:config (no spaces) and click return. This gives you a warning that it might harm the application. Ignore that and click on 'I'll be careful, I promise' and you get the config file that you can edit - with great care.

Look/search (scroll down) for: tenfourfox.plugins.enabled

Set it to true. (Double click it to toggle it)

Now close TenFourFox, open it again, and Flash will now work, as it now uses the plug-ins that Safari has stored.

I am using Flash 11.5.502.55 in TenFourFox and it works just fine. Here is how to get a working version of Flash Player:

You can check here: http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/ to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS. Note that version 10,1,102,64 is the last version available to PPC Mac users*.

* Unhelpfully, if you want the last version for PPC (G4 or G5) Macs, you need to go here: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/142/tn_14266.html and scroll down to 'Archived Versions/Older Archives'. Flash Player 10.1.102.64 is the one you download. More information here: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/838/cpsid_83808.html

You should first uninstall any previous version of Flash Player, using the uninstaller from here (make sure you use the correct one!):

http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/909/cpsid_90906.html

and also that you follow the instructions closely, such as closing ALL applications (including Safari) first before installing. You must also carry out a permission repair after installing anything from Adobe.

After installing, reboot your Mac and relaunch Safari, then in Safari Preferences/Security enable ‘Allow Plugins’.

(If you are running a PPC Mac with Flash Player 10.1.102.64 and are having problems with watching videos on FaceBook or other sites, try the following solution which fools the site into thinking that you are running the version 11.5.502.55:)

Download this http://scriptogr.am/nordkril/post/adobe-flash-11.5-for-powerpc to your desktop, unzip it, and replace the current Flash Player plug-in which is in your main/Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder, (not the user Library). Save the old one just in case this one doesn't work.

You've answered my question. I need a new computer! I say this because the thoughtful solution you offered is

too complicated and risky for me to try myself. Maybe I'll get a tech-savy friend to come over and help me follow your instructions but in general I think I'm living in the past and need to update my situation as I can't download

Google Chrome either and I could definitely use more RAM as well. Many plugins especially for music creation

can't be downloaded either. I've been using this set up for 8 years or so and that's a long time in computer years! I shouldn't be so resistant to change although my fears are stoked by the many glitches that people complain about when they get the most recent operating system. For advanced users, those are easy fixes but for me, they can seem very daunting.

Klaus,

Thanks so much for the very fast reply!

Unfortunately I am doing everything EXACTLY as you have suggested. I get to the warning page, I click on the "I'll be careful, I promise bubble. It then takes me page with the long list of the preferences with the headers Preference Name, Status, Type, and Value. When I type about:config exactly with no spaces and click return nothing appears on the page. When I scroll down I don't see it either. The only things I see pertaining to TenFourFox is this line that when I did a cut and paste appears much longer than it did on the screen.

I don't know if the machine I'm using, the OSX I'm using of the version of TenFourFox is the issue.

Here is what I'm running

Mac OSX Leopard 10.5.8

1.5 Ghz PowerPC G4 Powerbook

1GB DDR SDRAM

I am running this version of TenFourFox according to what it shows in the box when I click on About TenFourFox: 24.2.0

Also for what it's worh when I start TenFourFox this is the start page it goes to:

http://www.tenfourfox.com/site.aspx?aspxerrorpath=/start/en-US/firefox/24.2.0/wh atsnew/from/rv:1.9.2.28

The page comes up with a drawing of a magnifying glass wth the word OOPS! in big letters and this underneath it:

This site is currently unavailable.

So any additional feedback that you might have would be most appreciated!

Thanks!

Hi again Klaus,

That is the site I downloaded it from and it was for the 7450 ("G4e") which should be correct since I went into terminal and typed "machine" to make sure I had the right version.

This is what was on the site:

Here's the terminal screen:

Last login: Tue Dec 10 09:47:37 on ttys000

marick-zimmers-powerbook-g4-137:~ rickzimmer$ machine

ppc7450

rick-zimmers-powerbook-g4-137:~ rickzimmer$

The file itself that was downloaded was:

TenFourFox7450-24.2.0.app

It installed just fine and I don't believe it's the file for a G5. So I'm stumped unless I'm doing something wrong that I'm missing.

Thanks for trying to walk me through this!

Hi again Klaus,

Thanks for sticking with me on this.

I am not typing about:config anywhere but in the browser bar in order to get to the preferences page. The only thing that I've typed in the search line on the preferences page is tenfourfox.plugins.enabled and it doesn't find it. Same goes with scrolling down it's just not there. Here's a cut and paste of where it should be showing up alphabetically.

It should alphabetically be between this two right?

svg.text.css-frames.enabled;false

toolbar.customization.usesheet;true

I'm just not sure what's going on.

Thanks for trying to help me figure it out.

Do not type anything in the search line on the preference page. Just scroll down. Mine goes:

svg.text.css-frames.enabled

tenfourfox.layout.hide_java_plugin

tenfourfox.plugins.enabled

toolbar.customization.usesheet

You change it from false to true in the Value column.

I have the same version as you (24.2.0) so ignore my previous comment that that was only for Leopard! I can't imagine that the preference page would be different for Tiger when it has the same version number.

It may be worth while for you to download and install a fresh copy, then restart your Mac before attempting this again.

Dec 13, 2013 9:55 AM in response to Klaus1

Hi again Klaus,

I've found a solution (sort of).

I took your advice to download and install a fresh copy and restart but still no luck. The tenfourfox.plugins.enabled line still wasn't appearing.

Here's where things get interesting.

I went to this TenFourFox downloads page

http://code.google.com/p/tenfourfox/downloads/list

Scrolling down the list I noticed that the latest version for 7450 was done on Nov 14 but it's only for version 17.0.11

Since it was the latest (by date) I took a chance and downloaded and installed it. Amazingly enough I now had the tenfourfox.plugins.enabled line and I was able to set it to true as you suggested and sure enough video now plays in this version.

Here's where it gets interesting again. Now that I had a working version the start page of course tells me there is a later version to upgrade to, the 24.2.0 that I was using previously. I went ahead and downloaded it again, did the install and restart and once again no tenfourfox.plugins.enabled line and no video. I then reverted back to the 17.0.11 version and I guess that's where I'll stay since it's the only way I can have video enabled.

So it's a mystery and I suppose will remain so but I did want to thank you for your help and let you know I solved the problem even though I don't have the latest version, at least by number if not date.

Thanks!

Rick
