I see that conversion is needed for both FCP X and 7 to work in 4K. How is this format outputted with Compressor to ensure 4K delivery? Is 4K possible on a Blu Ray Disc or a higher format?

It doesn't need a conversion. There's 4K options in project settings. Output in compressor. Compressor defaults to source video size. No 4K in Blu-ray. Maximum is full HD, 1920x1080. You'd have to scale down your 4K to use on Blu-ray.

You can also use custom sequence sizes in FCP7. 4096x2048, etc.
I have a Mac Pro 3,1 with a 5770 - should be able to handle 4K but know the new Mac Pro is much better. Just cannot keep upgrading.
Surprised many do not know that - there has been alot of buzz about converting to 2K or ProRes, then re-grading with Color. Taking the Mac Pro from 8GB RAM to 12 GB RAM.
But, BUT... it may not be a good idea to actually work in 2k or 4k in fcp. Just worked on a project started by another editor working with 2k material. There were a lot of issues that would have been avoided if the edit had been done in 1080 and then conformed back to 2k when the picture was locked.
I am alright with working in 1080, just as long is a 4k workflow is possible.
