Stolen phone. Is it Erased?

Yesterday I got my phone stolen. I located it on iCloud: Find my phone. After a while the phone dot was offline (I'm asuming because the battery ran out).

I tried to erase it and it said erasing in progress, but I never got a confirmation email that it was erased.

Today I went on iCloud find my phone and the phone was no where on the map.

Question:

Has the phone been erased?

Is there anything else I need to do?

When I go to buy a new phone will I have problems getting all my original contacts?
