Deleting emails on Mail App won't delete them from the server.

When i delete/trash emails on the Mail application it does nothing to the mailbox on the server.

i.e. If i log into the server manually through the browser it remains in the inbox. And more annoyingly also on all my other devices. Whereas, if i delete on my phone or Ipad, it is deleted everywhere and the folders are a replica of each other.

Can i create this same relationship between my Macbook Pro and the online server?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9), iPad 4th Gen, iPhone 4S

Sorry I should have said, I am using an IMAP connection between Outlook.com (the server for my ..@hotmail.co.uk account) and Mail.

Broadly speaking the setup is working well and i can happily send and receive emails using 'pushed' emails (IDLE command). It just doesn't delete any of the emails on the server if i delete them on the Mac.

(as a side, the setup also generates 2 emails in the sent folder. But this is another issue on another discussion)

to add...

My Iphone and Ipad are both linked to the same account and they can successfully read, flag, delete etc from the mailbox server. (And emails from either of those devices only leave 1 email in the sent folder.)

The mailbox, when logged in from a browser is all working normally, so it seems the issues are with Mail and/or the IMAP connection that I have setup.

Thanks again. I am totally new to Macs. Just got my first one this week. Also I do not really understand how mail servers work, but did manage to find a youtube that showed me how to set up my hotmail IMAP account and bring in all of my mail folders. Being on OS X Maverick, the process was a little different than some of the instructions I had read in apple support discussions. The apple store had set it up as a POP3 account.

Deleting emails on Mail App won't delete them from the server.
