To update

The Settings>General>Software Update comes with iOS 5 and later.

Connect the iPod to your computer and update via iTunes as far as your iPod model allows

Here's how to update to iOS 6:

1. You need to have at least 3 GB of avalible disk space.

2. Make sure you are connected to a WiFi network. If not:

1. Go to Settings.

2. Tap WiFi.

3. Click on a WiFi network.

4. If the network is secure, enter the password to the WiFi network.

3. Go to Settings.

4. Tap General.

5. Tap Software Update.

6. Click on download and install.

7. When the download is finished, you will get a message. Tap install.

8. iOS 6 will install.

9. After the installation is finished, follow the setup assistant.

Assuming iTunes completed the backup and if the iOS device isn't being seen or accessed by iTunes, then:

  • try disconnecting and reconnecting the iOS device from your laptop
  • failing that, then restarting iTunes and connecting the iOS device again.

If that doesn't resolve this, then run a factory reset and restore. I've had a few cases where iTunes has gotten simply gotten confused, and cases where iOS got confused, and — if the steps above don't work — restarting iOS and running a factory reset and restore as described in that tech note has resolved this.
