Aperture and Photoshop are used for very different tasks, you may want to have both.

Aperture is used to maintain and manage huge photo libraries, that may be distributed over several drives. And it is a photo editor, designed to develope, adjust, and render (raw) photographs to perfection in professional quality.

Photoshop and Pixelmator are tools for image editing and graphics compositing - in addition to image enhancement you can use them to overlay and combine images into one, to add graphics and text, to turn photographs into graphics and make them look like fake line drawings or paintings.

For most needs Aperture in combination with Pixelmator would be a great combination. Pixelmator does not help to tag and archive your photo and Apertures raw developement and adjustment tools are superior, but it will add good tools for compositing.
