partitioned my hdd by accident and now i cant log on

Well, i accidently partition my hard drive and now it has 8gb and i cant get my imac to start up it keeps bringing me to os x utilities and i cant get the partition to increase its memory or even create another partition, it keeps saying: Partition failed with error couldnt unmount disk. help would be much appreciated.🙂 BTW if i buy an snow leopard disc would it fix the problem? PS:i dont care if i need to format the disk or whatever of your options require everything on the disk to be erased. Thanks

do you mean to use the Reinstall OS X option on the OS X utilities menu? ive tried that and when it tells me to choose a disk i cant choose my mac HD because it says i need 4.11 GB more to install it there and the reason why it says that is because i accidentaly partitioned it so theres only 8gb in it.And i cant do the internet recovery ether because im pretty sure it came with snow leopard i just updated it to moutain lion. Any other suggestions?

Not sure why you're getting that message. Whilst booted into the Recovery HD use Disk Utility to see if the Macintosh HD needs any repairs. Restart using Command+r > Disk Utility > Select Macintosh HD > Click on Repair Disk. If anything gets fixed click on repair disk again until you get a clean pass. Then proceed as above.

Getting late here, so I'll check back in in the morning to see if you've made progress. Good luck.

The hard drive is failing to partition because you can't partition a hard drive you're booting to; the recovery partition is on the same drive. Try booting with command + option + R and see if you can get to internet recovery. Some systems that came with snow leopard can do this with a firmware update that could be installed. YES! i got it to resize thanks for the help guys! what i did was that i copied an image of snow leopard from my old macbook and put it in an external drive (usb) and then booted the mac im trying to fix and then when to installation started up it said to choose a partition disk and i tryed the 8gb one and it said it needs more space and then...it hit me i started up in the external drive so i opened the disk utilities and was able to resize the partition!! so happy!
