Transferring files from a PC to iMac

I am going to buy an iMac and want to transfer files from a Windows 7 C to the iMac. If I have the data on an external hard drive for the PC, can I just plug this into the iMac and copy the files?

Is it easier for a dummy using an Ethernet cable between the computers?
