USB Audio Problems Late 2013 iMac - Clicking / Popping / Dropouts

I am having audio clicking and popping issues with a brand new late model 2013 iMac and a USB 2.0 multi-channel audio recording interface. Here is what I have learned so far:

Clicking and popping is occurring in both directions - playback and recording. I am not having any issues with internal audio, so this was easy to verify.

The same issue appears in many threads in Apple Support Communities and in various recording/pro audio forums, so this seems to be a common issue.

The issue is independent of the audio interface that is used. (I am using a brand new Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 that I purchased specifically to use with my new iMac, but the forums report the same issues for a variety of other interfaces and audio devices.)

Five potential root causes are mentioned in the various forums:

1) USB 3.0 compatibility issues - poor backward compatibility or other issues

2) Fusion Drive activity - artifacts caused by drive "swapping"

3) OS X version - newer versions may be worse than old versions

4) App Nap - ?

5) Driver issues

Potential short-term solutions include:

1) Change driver - The "Class Compliant Mode" app (that I downloaded from the link on the Focusrite website) improved the issue for me, but clicking and popping occurs every few seconds instead of constantly.

2) Exchange the Fusion Drive for a conventional 7200 RMP hard drive - Forums report that this does not fix the issue.

3) Install older version of OS - Forums report that this does not fix the issue.

4) Disable App Nap - Forums report that this does not fix the issue.

5) Belkin Thunderbolt express dock - Forums report that a Thunderbolt hub with USB gives excellent results, but the only one I am aware of is the Belkin one which is ~$300. (I will not pay $300 to fix thousands of dollars of new equipment that should not need to be fixed!!!)

6) Apple Care's advice was an SMC reset (essentially a reboot), which clearly did not work. The person that I talked to was not aware of this being a known issue.

I am at a point where I need to decide whether or not to get a refund for this iMac since my primary reason for getting this new computer was recording. So...can anyone help to answer these questions:

Has Apple acknowleged this issue? If so, has Apple committed to fixing this issue via a software upgrade or have they admitted that this is a hardware limitation that is not fixable?

Has anyone found a free or inexpensive workaround (i.e. not the $300 Belkin dock) that completely elimiates this issue?

Hi,

my system is the same only 0.5 TB instead of 1 TB SSD.

I have the same issue (crackling with AudioKontrol 1 in iTunes, REAKTOR, LogicProX). I am using Mavericks 10.9.2 and no change.

I am using LogicPro X and there is a strange trick: set in Logic to lowest ⚠ latency (32 samples) and there are no crackles!! ?? ! The higher latency the higher is crackling rate (like old LPs).

Another „solution”: choose samplerate 48000Hz instead of 44100Hz.

Nevertheless this is only a workaround which i don't like.

Would Belkin Thunderbolt express dock + AudioKontrol 1 help?

Hi!

I updated my iMac's OS X to version 10.9.2 at begining of this week and have been using the system without pops and cracks with USB audio out at maximum bit rate of 192 kHz 🙂

So in my point of view:

1) Replace of fusion drive's hard disk part (Seagate 3 TB disk) to new one (Seagate 3 TB disk) in Apple's local service partner helped for my iMac's freezing problems.

2) OS X 10.9.2 update fixed my audio problems.

So, basically I'm happy Mac user again 😍

AHHHH I LOVE YOU!!! I've been researching for hours what to do after having my entire logic board & top case replaced. I do not have the fusion, I have the SSD 1tb in the late 2013 Macbook Pro. Wouldn't it be nice if the "geniuses" at the Genius Bar knew ANY of this, which they don't and automatically chauck it up to hardware, when all the while it's a tiny easy fix. We'll see how long it lasts! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

I have just bought a brand new MacBook Pro 2014 with 512 GB SSD drive using audio kontrol 1 with ableton live. I just updated to 10.9.2 and it helped a bit when I watch youtube vids where there is only a bit of crackling and popping, but i didn't help in Ableton massive pops and crackles. I might aswell throw this laptop out since it was bought for music production. It helps a bit lowering the buffer size, setting it to the lowest amount of samples. But there is still crackles. This is so so bad. Does anybody know for sure if this is a software issue with Mavericks or if it is hardware related?

I am just unsure about if I should return the machine, since I have paid 3.000 € for a machine which should be good for making music, but it is worthless!

Thanks for your time...

Hey man, it's definitely not a hardware issue in my opinion. Here's why I believe this, I took my computer back to one of the "geniuses" at the genius bar, where NO "genius" knew anything about this issue?! Seriously? Apple doesn't do continuing education for an issue people are screaming about in their help forum that's 5 pages long over months of time? Anyway, don't get me started, my sentiments are the same, as I thought spending $3,000 on a computer, it would suffice as the best machine on the planet to produce music with, WRONG! I spent 4 days without my computer while they replaced essentially my ENTIRE computer including the top case, when it NEVER even needed to be replaced, ALL due to the ignorance of their "geniuses". Perhaps it's their ignorance that is why their computers are so expensive, bc they're just wasting perfectly good parts of an entire $3,000 computer. The problem persisted with all new hardware exactly the same way, then I updated the OS, I haven't heard the problem again since I updaed and changed the bit rate under the Apple audio settings, HOWEVER, I have not yet tested in Ableton, this is only with playing Spotify and YouTube with music on while I work. I'll test with Ableton soon. I would DEMAND to get your money back, which will likely never happen, but let's just have more faith in Apple since Steve Jobs died, and hope they can fix this with the next update. Good luck!
