mavericks keeps freezing when i want to delete something and cannot see application or documents. its made my mac really slow. very disappointed.

meant to say that i have a may 2011 macbook pro and was fine with snowleopard, but i took up the offer of free upgrade to mavericks and am considering wiping my drive and going back to previous os. i cant even click on the arrow at the side of a folder to view it, it just wont do anything. the same when i download something. it wont show up in my download section for ages unless i quit finder for a while. there seems to be something seriously wrong with finder.

ive read elsewhere that finder can be cpu heavy. i dont seem to have that problem when looking via activity monitor but my mac has become very slow and really annoying.

any help in solving this problem would be much appreciated, or im gonna wipe and start again. if i was convinced by the system i would do a fresh install instaed of the upgrade i did.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Kernel Extensions: These may be a problem. The kernel is the core of OSX. A Kernel extension modifies this core. Any or all could be the source of problems. I would 1) try a safe boot (hold down shift at restart). This does some software checking and then starts without third party software. If your mac runs well, then you know the problem is the third party stuff. 2) research this stuff and see if it is compatible with Mavericks, and see if you have the latest versions. 3) consider uninstalling the apps that put these there, if you can live without them. I do not specifically know about these apps, which is why you should research them. 4GB of RAM is the probably the minimum for using Mavericks, but if you are doing audio or video editing, you'll probably want more.

I would look at all the items I've marked in red, and marked with ***, and see if you can uninstall the apps that put them there. If you can't live without the apps, make sure they are up to date. If they are not compatible with Mavericks, maybe find an alternative that is. Your mac is not as badly modified as many that are on these discussions (with the exception of MacShitter, which is truly horrible software). Another option is to back up your documents, erase your HD, and do a clean reinstall of Mavericks. Then copy your documents back over to your HD and reinstall your apps from scratch. This would be the definitive treatment.

Hi, Arthur. I'm having essentially the same issue kid303 is having on almost the identical platform (mine is 13 inch, not 15 inch, though.) Anyway, I'm going to paste my EtreCheck results. From what I can tell, I don't seem to have the same things going on, but I'm experiencing the random freezes and crashes that can only be fixed with a hard restart.

I'd like to note first, though, that if you can figure out how to remove that vzwireless.plist, I'd love to know because I don't even know why it's on my MacBook!

com.valvesoftware.steamclean.plist isn't actually crapware/spyware/malware. It's part of the Steam app, the one that you can buy/download games and play them through. I at least know what that is. Steam is made by Valve Software.

As for com.rim.driver.BlackBerryUSBDriverInt, I have NO idea why that's on my system, either. I've never owned a BlackBerry product. My first smartphone was a Palm Centro and every subsequent smartphone has been an iPhone. I was an Apple Fangirl until Mavericks... :-\

The "old programs" list is filled with my Microsoft Office suite. LOL Yea... I don't want to upgrade because now that I'm no longer in school, I really don't need the latest Office. The first 4 programs aren't really that "old" either. EtreCheck probably just isn't used to seeing them very often.

I did a little sleuthing after I posted my EtreCheck results last night and I think I've isolated my issue. It lies in com.apple.IconServicesAgent. From all of the forum results on Google for that particular process, it appears it's the one to blame. I can't kill it; when I do it just comes back - like one of those nasty little Windoze virii. I also haven't found a way to get it to stop hogging my memory. I'm going to leave Activity Monitor open and the next time I experience a freeze, hopefully I'll be able to at least CMD+tab over to see if that thing is taking an outrageous amount of my memory when it happens. If it does, I'm hauling this Macbook BACK to the Apple Store. They replaced my HDD, claiming that was the reason for my freezes, but they continue. I'm just going to keep bugging them until this gets fixed, because there's nothing worse than your "dependable" computer randomly freezing and crashing on you!

Thanks for replying, though! I was kinda hoping you might know how to get rid of that VZWireless .plist thing! :-)

To figure out what you've got in startup, go to your Apple menu, click on System Preferences, and then on Users and Groups. In there, make sure your username is selected, and then click on the tab on the right side labeled "Login Items". If you want to turn anything off or remove it from the list, click the padlock in the lower left corner, input your password, and then do so. :-)

thats the problem, since i have removed the other things it has become more responsive but i have not installed anything sfor a while and it used to be ok. i think it will be far quicker when i reduse my hd to a minimal. the problem was i just couldnt delete anything without it freezing and having to press cmd option escape shift and the arrow to quit the process. gonna delete loadsa stuff and get a ssd drive for osx and remove optic drive for storage. what do you think. ive seen people do it and maybe put more ram into the book to.

what do you think about people adding a sata where the optic drive is together with ssd.

anyway youve helped me a load so thank you very much.

ive removed everything in the list that i could find. the device finder is a cannon or olympus thing. i have a cannon printer an olympus dictaphone and a lot of dyslexia software.

mavericks keeps freezing when i want to delete something and cannot see application or documents. its made my mac really slow. very disappointed
