I have some sample fx files that I got from someone but the moron who sampled it used the L(mono) jack instead of the headphone jack in recording the sample, so the resulting sample file is a stereo file but sounds mono. Is there any way I can alter a channel of the stereo/mono file in Logic Pro to make it sound more like a stereo sample, maybe offset the 2 channels slightly?
As chaosmoon suggested, a little sample delay will give the impression of stereo. However, the sound will not be mono compatible.
By using very small amounts of delay on one channel, you are getting into the domain of the "Haas Effect" which describes the way the ear/brain interprets directionality of a sound. In your case, if you take the same sound and duplicate it on two channels, pan them, and add a small amount of delay to, say, just the right side, the ear will percieve the sound as coming from the left. That's because the right side is delayed. Sounds simple enough, right? And very small amounts of delay (10's - 100's of samples, or even 1 - 10 milliseconds) will create the impression of stereo from a mono source. BUT, when the delay times are that small, if you put that sound in mono, it will flange with a static-sounding tone (called the "comb filter effect"). If the delay is really really small (on the order of samples), putting the sound in mono might even cause it to cancel out to a great degree.
You might even hear comb filtering in a stereo mix if you narrow the stereo spread with the pan pots.
So adding delay to just one side is a totally legitimate effect and highly useful to create the impression of stereo. Just know ahead of time that your sound will not be mono compatible, and that for the effect to be heard well in stereo, your panning will likely have to be hard left & right for the two sounds.
