I can send emojis to another iphone user and they will receive them. When they send me an emoji to my iphone, there will either be a blank message or symbols. How can i fix this?

When i send an emoji to an iphone user, they will receive it with no problem. When they try to send me an emoji, the message is either blank or has symbols. How can i fix this?
