Extra display: How it works?

Hi there, I'm debating buying a cable that links my macbook (white late 2009 model) up to my 24 inch HD tv.

I'm an aspiring music producer and I work on Logic Pro 9 for mixes. The problem is, my macbook is 13". Logic seems very small and cramped with this side of screen, so I decided it would be cool if I could fix it by connecting a bigger screen (my tv).

Now here's my question: Would the new screen just mimic my laptop and keep logic all squished but enlarged, or would it intelligently rescale for that screen alone. I'd want my macbook the same resolution if possible!

I've never used multiple displays so I'd like to know how it all works, ideally from people with experience.

Thanks,

Fergus
