iPhone could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (36)?

I have an iPhone 4s. Earlier this week the battery died and when I plugged it in to charge instead of it turning on it showed the connect to iTunes logo. I did this and it said my iPhone needed to be restored. It updated to the latest software as I hadn't gotten round to updating to 7.4 yet.It did that fine (as far as I am aware) and then I got a message saying it needed to be restored again. I did that and it goes through a stage of extracting the software and then connecting to the iPhone, the apple logo appears on my phone with a bar underneath it and then I get the error message " the iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (36)"

Since then I have tried updating on three laptops and a Mac, with different USB cables. I've tried temporarily disabling the internet security as the apple help section suggested it could be interfering. I've deleted and re-installed iTunes so that I have the latest version and none of that has worked. As the phone now won't turn off unless the battery is dead I can't put it in DFU mode to try that. I'm completely out of options! Any further suggestions would be great.
