Airplay keeps dropping out when using apple tv

I have tried this using a wifi connection as well as a tethered iphone connection as a personal hotspot and in both instances I experienced airplay dropping out. This was incredibly frustrating as I was using apple tv on my data projector to receive a keynote presentation and the presentation keeps disappearing, I had to re-engage airplay each time. I have disabled anything that even looks like a screen saver and cannot find which device is causing the shut down, the apple tv or my ipad that I am using as my presentation device. This does not happen when I use my iphone app Keynote remote as a remote and plug in my ipad to the data projector, however the print is so small that it is difficult to use the iphone as a reader. Is there a way of using Keynote remote the other way and having the iphone as the slave and the ipad as the remote control?
