Do you mean your primary @icloud.com email address? If yes and you would like to change it, then you would have to create a completely new account. Therefore you have to delete your currently used account from your Mac ("System preferences > iCloud > sign out"). After that you should be able to create a new one in "System Preferences > iCloud" and get a free @icloud.com email address.

David, I have a similar issue but I am still running into a road block. I have had an account with apple for email since before 2005 and it was perfect for that moment in life. I used my name to set up as my appleID. shawnacarpenter@mac.com. It has now since been year and years later. I am married and have my own business. I would like my new apple email to be nonnaiandd.icloud.com. When going to set up a new apple ID as you suggested. It asks for a valid email address as the apple ID. Well, my valid email address is my icloud account (shawnacarpenter@mac.com.) This email is what would be my primary email in the account. I want a new apple ID and new email. How do I proceed? When I do a new apple Id is still needs an email.. I'm frustrated. What to do. I wish I could simply change my account's apple ID and email to match to the new nonnaiand@icloud.com. Help. Thank you.
