My iPhone 5 updated to  iOS 7.1.1 & I used the 'Exchange' & 'Outlook' options instead of 'Hotmail' and it FINALLY work!  I was receiving the same POP.LIVE errors when trying to add my hotmail account. So this worked for me....

Speedy68 you are spot-on! Removing the 2-step feature in security settings allowed me to access my hotmail account  on my iphone 5 again. Thanks so much, you saved me a lot of grief.

After you've turned on two-step verification, some apps (like the mail apps on some phones) or devices (like an Xbox or Windows Phone, for example) will show an incorrect password error, because they can't prompt you to enter a security code when you try to sign in.

If you've turned on two-step verification, and you see an incorrect password error with an app or device, you'll need to get and enter a unique app password to sign in. Once you've signed in with your app password, you're all set to use that app or device. You'll need to create and sign in with a new app password for each app or device that can't prompt you for a security code.

The steps for generating a new app password are always the same:

    1. Sign in to your Microsoft account.
    2. Under Password and security info, tap or click Edit security info.If you're prompted for a security code here, enter it and tap or click Submit.
    3. Under App passwords, tap or click Create a new app password.A new app password is generated and appears on your screen.

This worked for me too. I turned off the two-step authentication, added my Hotmail account to my phone, turned two-step authentication back on, and then added my phone as an authorized device (including adding the authentication app, etc.) It is all working now. Thank you speedy68!!

I just solved my problem per your direction - I have an iPhone 6 and was having trouble with a Live email account.  I turned off the two step verification and it worked!!!  Many thanks!!!

The simplest thing to do is to log into your Hotmail/Outlook account on PC, go to Options > Account Details (password, addresses, time zone) > Security & Privacy > Manage Advanced Security > scroll down, and "create a new app password." Use that password when logging into the email account through the Settings on your Iphone.

The problem is two step verification. There is no need to delete, reset, or turn off your account or phone. I had this issue too, with the phone being verified as well.

    Hey Speedy68,

Thank You so much for passing along that solution!!  Just so you know, it took me 2 Verizon Tech specialists and well over an hour trying to get their help getting my msn email account back up on my iPhone 6... to no avail.  For me the problem began after I'd changed my password on my MSN email account through Outlook on my laptop.  Finally after googling the issue (while the Verizon tech was still on the phone) I happened to pull up this link and glance at your message.  I went in to my Outlook account, found the setting you mentioned and whah-La!  She passed the fix on to the whole Verizon team from through their email.  She had been aware of the problem existing on gmail, but not MSN.  She was unaware they'd implemented that feature.  Anyway, thanks.
