a) cannot add music with Files -> Add to Library...
b) cannot edit song info
regarding a), adding music by importing a cd works fine.

Update to Mac OS 10.6.8. Apple menu > SOftware update.
What format are these songs?
I'm using Mac OS 10.9. Downgrading to 10.6.8 might solve the problem, but one would have hoped that software upgrades do not cause problems that didn't exist before. (And I'm not trying to be facetious with this comment - I think that it is likely that the problem was caused by the upgrade to Mavericks, and is not necessarily due to iTunes itself.)
The files are .m4a files. (AAC encoding)

I wouldn't do this. I suggested you upgrade to 10.6.8 because your post showed you were on 10.6.5.
Have you restarted your computer?
